Drain Cleaning
For cleaning clogged drains, there are several options ranging from natural remedies to chemical cleaners to professional services. Natural solutions include baking soda and vinegar, boiling water, and dish soap. Professional drain cleaning services use specialized tools like snakes, high speed drain cleaners and hydro-jetters for more stubborn clogs.
Let’s take a closer look…
Natural Methods:
Baking Soda and Vinegar
This combination creates a fizzing reaction that can break down some clogs. Pour baking soda down the drain, followed by vinegar, let it sit, and then flush with hot water. Although this may clear the occasional clog it’s usually ineffective and if you use too much baking soda it can accumulate in your pipes and make things worse.
Boiling Water
Pouring boiling water down the drain can sometimes melt grease and loosen the clog. This may work temporarily but the melted grease may accumulate further down the pipe as it cools.
Boiling Water and Dish Soap
A combination of dish soap and boiling water can help break down grease and grime. This is a slightly more effective method than without the soap but still not great.
Plunger
A plunger can be effective for removing clogs by creating suction and pressure. It’s worth a try.
A bent wire coat hanger can be used to manually dislodge some clogs especially in tubs, showers and lavatory drains. This method works best on hair clogs.
Drain Cleaners:
Enzyme Drain Cleaners
A more environmentally friendly option that is designed to dissolve clogs. The enzymes eat away at grease and fats. These are most effective as a preventative measure but can provide some temporary clog relief.
Chemical Drain Cleaners
Drain Cleaning Acids: A strong chemical cleaner designed to dissolve clogs. However, it can damage pipes over time, especially on older homes, and is not recommended for frequent use. Use precaution when using these products and adhere to the safety precautions on the label.
Professional Drain Cleaning:
Hydro Jetting
A powerful method using high-pressure water to clear even the most stubborn clogs including sludge, grease and roots.
Drain Snakes/Augers
A plumbing tool that uses a spinning cable and cutting blade used to break up and remove clogs.
High Speed Drain Cleaner
This tool is similar to a drain snake but the cable spins much faster and is generally more effective. This machine can also be used to remove rust scale and hardened materials from pipes.
